| Duncan was much noted in his time and was frequently employed in embassies to England. He is said to have discharged his duty in those negotiations "with integrity and honour".

"Edward 1V of England and James 111 of Scotland - Edward favoured trade and intercourse between the countries, as many entries show, and also encouraged Scotsmen by letters of denization to settle in his realm. he steadily protected James Earl of Douglas, as a valuable instrument, when opportunity arose for interfering in Scottish affairs. He kept spies in his pay, and also some much higher personages, for the Bishops of Aberdeen and St. Andrews, Lord Boyd and Dygon (or Duncan) of Dundas, and others received considerable annuities, doubtless for their offices in English interests". |

He was granted the 5 merk lands of Wester Duddingston in 1522, to be held from Sir George Dundas and his successors for 40 pennies yearly. | Succeeded his brother William Dundas. He married Elizabeth Hamilton and in 1527 he and his wife entered into a contract with his mother and younger brothers. The contract shows that James and his wife were to have possession of the lands of Nether Newliston and the lands of Wester Duddingston, for which they were to pay Christian Cant (James' mother) £80 worth of goods lying ready on the lands of Newliston, to be at her disposal whenever she pleased, she always having her honourable support and remaining in tak with her son James, of the whole lands for her time as she was before the death of her husband, excepting that all profits and increases would go to James and his wife, who would uphold his mother and the servants as before. James also contracted to pay his brother Sir John Dundas, 10 merks yearly until he was benefied in £20 a year and in £24 a year for "his bairns part of gear" which latter sum would remain in their hands until Sir John received the £20 yearly, when he would discharge the 10 merks and the £24. He also contracted to pay yearly to Duncan Dundas, £10 until he was placed in a steading of "aucht oxin tilth, be yeir" paying him also £20 a year of "bairns part of gear" which would lie in their hands until he was "stakit be ane steding", when he would discharge it. | |

In 1584 John Dundas styled "younger of Newliston" had a Royal Licence to depart from the King's Army and Raid at Stirling. In 1587 he appeared before John Graham Justice Depute, accused of failing to join the King's Raid at Dumfries. In 1601, while His Majesty (King James V1) was in the inner house of the tollbooth of Edinburgh, sitting with the Lords in the administration of justice, some hot language passed between John Dundas and James Hamilton and Dundas "without regard to the place or His Majesty's presence" struck Hamilton. For this offence he was warded in the Castle of Edinburgh, but freed on bond for £2000 Scots, by James Dalzell, merchant and burgess of Edinburgh, on condition that he "repair to his lodging in the Burgh and remain there until he satisfies the King's will for the offence committed." John Dundas was afterwards fined 1750 merks (£1,166.13s.4d Scot). |

| John Dundas was Knighted before 1644. He became involved in a series of debts and during the last years of his life probably never collected any parts of the rents of his estate. In various records John Dundas is shown as James. | ||

| Elizabeth succeeded to the bankrupt estates of her father in 1655. Craigston seems to have been lost to the family before this time and in 1663 Newliston was acquired by George Campbell an Edinburgh brewer, who had accumulated the whole debts burdening the estate. | ||
| Elizabeth continued to live at Newliston and to add to her misfortunes, was made the subject of a forcible abduction in 1667. William Dundas, brother of James Dundas of Morton was the principal actor in the affair and he was held prisoner in the tollbooth of Edinburgh while the Privy Council made enquiries. Proceedings against William and his accomplices for attempted rape were later given up. | ||
| In 1669, Elizabeth Dundas married Sir John Dalrymple of Stair who purchased the lands of Newliston from George Campbell's son. | ||
| Lord Stair and Elizabeth Dundas had ten children. The estate of Newliston was sold in 1753 by John 5th Earl of Stair to Roger Hog, banker. Thomas Hog, son of Roger erected a new house on the estate about 1793. | ||
